Few things remind us of Christmas more than baubles, tinsel and lights, not to mention those family get-togethers around the fire. But it’s easy to forget that half the joy is in the little details.
Like an exquisitely made holly wreath hanging from the door, a new EP draws together a host of artists to collaborate on five original compositions which sketch their interpretation of the Christmas song tradition.
A wintertime frolic jointly released on Arctic Circle and Static Caravan Recordings, That Fuzzy Feeling flits from pastoral folk-pop to seasonal sparring between spouses and back again; a collection of lilting, bittersweet songs which lean on the more melancholy side of the festive period. They shimmer and glide but with playfulness too – less Snowflakes Are Dancing than Snowflakes Are Sledding Downhill.
Featuring tracks sung by Josh Weller, Dale Grundle and Emily Barker, as well as a duet between Weller and Paloma Faith, That Fuzzy Feeling is a gentle and knowing nod to Christmas records from the likes of Sufjan Stevens and Low, sprinkled with snow globe scenes and antlers aplenty.
It’s Christmas (And I Hate You) is a Fairytale of New York for the toytronica generation; a Yuletide barney re-imagined as a brassy, offbeat carol, and one which references Greek mythology and human rights activists. Mistletoe & Wine this certainly isn’t.
The remaining four tracks range from ethereal delights to near-baroque arrangements, underpinned by gently swelling horns and slow-building harmonies, while the chiming strains of Unreasonable Dream, Christmas Night is a breezy closer, gradually escalating towards a stomping crescendo – an effect which is no doubt bolstered by performance-enhancing mulled wine and mince pies.
“As Christmassy as a penguin wearing a red felt hat with bells on.” - S. Claus, Sleigh Today
For added Christmas cheer, the Arctic Circle Ensemble and choir will play a special show at Union Chapel on December 5th, bringing the whole festive shebang to life with all the wonder of the Yuletide season.
